Your guide to the most eco-friendly coworking spaces in Hong Kong

Over the past year, we have witnessed the development of several new work trends – from the growth of flexible work, the widespread adoption of big data and other technologies, and the acceptance of an employee-first approach. Now, eco-friendly initiatives are slowly gaining momentum as more people realize how important it is to protect our planet.

If you’re a freelancer or a decision maker in a company, you have the option to choose where you want to spend a significant portion of your working life, so why wouldn’t you choose a workspace whose world outlook resonates with your own?

As a concept, coworking spaces inherently offer some level of sustainability that exceeds your traditional office. By having different businesses and freelancing individuals share a workspace and its amenities, coworking automatically means less waste, and if done correctly, can even function as a driving force for sustainable change within their community.

But not all coworking spaces are created equal.

Some coworking spaces are taking it one step further to implement green strategies into their space so you can enjoy all the benefits of a productive workspace without having to compromise on sustainability. We scoured the city to search out these rare gems, and present to you our list of Hong Kong’s most eco-friendly coworking spaces.

TheDesk has a network of coworking spaces across the city, all of which are equipped with recycling facilities and use materials and technologies that reduce their carbon footprint. However, their Strand 50 location in Sheung Wan deserves special mention for its urban farm rooftop where members can grow and harvest their own organic produce. But that’s not all, the spacious outdoor terrace is also used to host monthly workshops and educational farming activities!

Coworking space Hong Kong

Banyan Workspace is a boutique coworking space founded on the principle that a successful business must go hand-in-hand with community responsibility. The space itself was designed with sustainability as one of its top priorities, while simultaneously ensuring that it maintains an elevated, luxurious brand and a viable business model.

Using locally and regionally sourced natural materials, recycled accessories and energy-efficient appliances, providing ethically sourced drinks and foods, and development of an extension recycling station that includes composting and electronics waste collection are just some of the initiatives Banyan has implemented to reduce its environmental impact. They really do make it easy for companies to make sustainability a part of their day-to-day operations!

Garage Society has several spaces dotted around Hong Kong, but there are two locations in particular worth mentioning for their eco-friendly features. First of which is their Wan Chai brand with its green rooftop feature where members can plant their own food and herbs, and host urban farming activities all year round to educate people on the environmental and social benefits of urban agriculture.

We also love their Sai Ying Pun space which regularly hosts neighbourhood block parties serving plant-based drinks and vegan eats from their in-house café.

Eaton Club has three locations in Wan Chai, Central and Mong Kok, but we’re going to highlight the Mong Kok space today for its environmentally-friendly design. For starters, the furniture is custom-built to be multi-functional, some of which also come with removable cushions for easy washing, effectively reducing waste that comes from frequently buying new furniture.

Earlier this year, the hotel in which Eaton Club’s Mong Kok space is situated, was awarded with a Platinum recognition from sustainable tourism advisory Earth Check for its efforts to incorporate green practices into the day-to-day operations of the space. As such, the coworking space also upholds the practise of removing single-use plastic and using more energy-efficient LED lightbulbs.
